For the whole year I had the desire to ask `Umar bin
Al-Khattab regarding the explanation of a Verse (in Surat Al-Tahrim) but I
could not ask him because I respected him very much. When he went to perform
the Hajj, I too went along with him. On our return, while we were on the way
home. `Umar went aside to answer the call of nature by the Arak trees. I waited
till he finished and then I proceeded with him and asked him. "O chief of
the Believers! Who were the two wives of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) who aided
one another against him?" He said, "They were Hafsah and
`Aisha."

Hadith 4962
The words by which Allah mentions Ayesha in the Holy Quran
in Surah Tahrim verses 3-5 are:
وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ إِلَىٰ بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ حَدِيثًا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتْ بِهِ وَأَظْهَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَرَّفَ بَعْضَهُ وَأَعْرَضَ عَن بَعْضٍ ۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِ قَالَتْ مَنْ أَنبَأَكَ هَٰذَا ۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِيَ الْعَلِيمُ الْخَبِيرُ
And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allah showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Acquainted."
إِن تَتُوبَا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا ۖ وَإِن تَظَاهَرَا عَلَيْهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ مَوْلَاهُ وَجِبْرِيلُ وَصَالِحُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۖ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ ظَهِيرٌ
If you two [wives] repent to Allah , [it is best], for your hearts have deviated. But if you cooperate against him - then indeed Allah is his protector, and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers and the angels, moreover, are [his] assistants.
عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَاتٍ مُّؤْمِنَاتٍ قَانِتَاتٍ تَائِبَاتٍ عَابِدَاتٍ سَائِحَاتٍ ثَيِّبَاتٍ وَأَبْكَارًا
Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you [all], would substitute for him wives better than you - submitting [to Allah ], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, and traveling - [ones] previously married and virgins.
Points of note:
- Their question, who informed you of this? in verse 3 clearly indicates their lack of belief in the Divine Messengership of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
- In verse 4, Allah says, their hearts were deviated. And Allah orders them to repent but the next verse narrates that they did not repent despite the order of Allah and His Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
- In verse 5 – Allah
threatens to replace them with wives who have qualities which they do not have
and in doing so it also explains the evil qualities which were present in
Ayesha (l.a.) and Hafsa (l.a.).
- Submissive – Ayesha and Hafsa denied the Messengership of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
- Believers – Ayesha and Hafsa disbelieved in the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
- Obedient – Ayesha and Hafsa were disobedient to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
- Repentant – Ayesha and Hafsa did not repent
- Worshippers – Ayesha and Hafsa did not worship Allah
- Those who observe fasts – Ayesha and Hafsa did not fast
- Previously married – Ayesha and Hafsa were not previously married
- Virgins – Ayesha and Hafsa were not virgins
